Summary- The article explains how Former Vice President Al Gore believes that global warming is making wildfires and hurricanes worse than they already are.
- Gore is blaming the "reliance on fossil fuels for allowing hurricanes to get as destructive as they have been." - Fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, and natural gas) have been creating more global warming since many years ago. - Gore explained that "as the Earth gets hotter, water evaporates, setting the stage for hurricanes to build up and cause drogues in some regions of the world." Which can be a reasonable explanation as for why many hurricanes have been happening in this past years. - In the article, Harry Reid, who worked with the U.S House and Senate, also asked a significant question which was "Do we need to change?" the answer to that question should be 'yes." This is because, in order for global warming to stop or at least to be reduced, humans must stop doing so many activities that are creating this problem. In this case, they must stop using fossil fuels. |
Global Warming is Making Wildfires and Hurricanes WorseFacts- "... ongoing wildfires are ripping through northern California, leaving at least 35 people dead across four counties."
- Fossil fuels are allowing hurricanes to get as destructive as they have been. - Water getting hotter does not directly cause the storms, most scientists agree that climate changes allow them to become more powerful than in years past. - Some skeptics of climate change, including President Donald Trump, have failed to acknowledge global warming as fact, rather than a made-up concept "by and for the Chinese." |
Key Terms- Global Warming: Warming of the earth's lower atmosphere (troposphere) because of icnreases in the concentrations of one or more greenhouse gases. It can result in climate change that can last for decades to thousands of years.
- Renewable Energy: Energy from a source that is not depleted when used, such as wind or solar power. - Fossil Fuels: A natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms. - Wildfire: A large, destructive fire that spreads quickly over woodland or brush. - Climate: Physical properties of the trotosphere of an area based n analysis of its weather records over a long period. The two main factors determining an area's climate are its average temperature, with its seasonal variation, and the average amount and distribution of precipitation. |
Opinion
In my opinion, global warming would keep occurring unless humans start to do something about it. Individuals must stop using fossil fuels, instead, they must reduce waste, use solar energy, use clean coal and oil, and most important, they must start planting trees (since they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen). Unfortunately, they are many individuals that believe that global warming is not real. Individuals believe that there has not been a significant temperature change since the 90s. In an article about global warming not being real, it said how "The upswing in the temperature started from 1975, continued till 1997 and the temperature has been flat since then..." Which gives many people a reason as for why to believe that global warming is unreal. But, there have been some scientists that found a reasonable explanation as for why global warming is real. For example, in a video called, "Why Climate Change is Making Hurricane Season Worse..." it explained how climate scientists are saying that they now have a connection between global warming and extreme weather. They believe that "the link comes down to a physical law called the Clausius-Clayperon equation." This states that the "air can hold 7% more water with every degree Celsius that temperature rises." In other words, hurricanes are able to store more water and then the water is dumped as they make landfall. For climate scientists, this theory is right since now in 2017, the Atlantic has been particularly warm and that is the place in which most of the horrible hurricanes are forming.
